VALE STEVE FOLKES
The rugby league fraternity is in mourning after news emerged that former Canterbury player and coach Steve Folkes has passed away suddenly today. He was 59.
Best known as a tough, industrious second-rower who played well above his weight, Folkes played 245 first-grade games for the Bulldogs from 1978-1991, featuring in the club’s 1980, 1984-85 and 1988 grand final victories. He also represented Australia in five Tests and NSW in nine Origins between 1986 and ’88.
Folkes’ 11-season stint as Canterbury head coach included a grand final appearance in his first season in 1998 and premiership success in 2004. More recently, he coached the Australian Jillaroos team.

Chief executive Andrew Hill would like to offer the following words on behalf of the Bulldogs on the passing of Steve Folkes:
“The club is shocked and saddened at the news of the passing of Bulldogs legend Steve Folkes. Steve played such a major part in the history of the Bulldogs, both as a player and coach, and was without doubt one of the giants of the club.
Steve symbolised everything that the Bulldogs stand for and was respected throughout the game for his toughness and determination. He never took a backward step and was loved by the fans for his courage and commitment to the club.
His legacy as a Bulldog and what he did for the club will never be forgotten and our hearts go out to his family and friends at this difficult time.
The club asks that everyone respect the privacy of the family during this time.”
