TWL RD 6: KINGZ CONTAINER CREW WARRIORS PLAYER RATINGS

The better team drew – and it wasn’t our lot. But the Warriors escaped with a valuable and gratefully received competition point courtesy of a remarkable comeback and a wild finish in a 22-all draw with Manly.
Trailing 16-0 after 27 minutes, the Warriors clawed back to trail by six at the break but were behind by eight for most of the second half before a last-minute try and somewhat controversial penalty on the last play of regulation time to miraculously force golden point.
The Warriors’ had the better opportunities in golden point but couldn’t ice them…though there’s few who would argue the hosts deserved more than a even split of the spoils.
Despite producing the poorest team performance of the 2024 season so far, there were some moments of brilliance and phenomenally industrious individual to sort through in the Kingz Container Crew Warriors player ratings.
1 CHARNZE NICOLL-KLOKSTAD: Didn’t have the glittering highlight reel of his comeback match a week earlier, but produced an outrageous 33 runs for 346 metres – including a team-high eight tackle-breaks and a line-break – to threaten Joey Manu’s 48-hour old NRL run metres record. 8

2 DALLIN WATENE-ZELEZNIAK: A sensational intercept try to close the halftime gap, on hand to score the late try that kept the Warriors alive and over 200 running metres with nine tackles. Hard to pin the tries down the right edge on the winger this time. One handling error. 7.5
3 ROCCO BERRY: Impressive from an involvement perspective – 119 metres from 10 runs and 25 tackles without a miss – but no standout moments and was part of an edge regularly exposed by Manly. 6
4 ROGER TUIVASA-SHECK: Ran for 201 metres on 17 carries and made 16 tackles, but two glaring handling errors and opposite Ben Trbojevic strolling through for a second-half try made for an overall unhappy night for the novice centre. 6
5 MARCELO MONTOYA: Another workhorse display from the left winger with 20 carries for 183 metres, along with seven tackle-breaks. Also had a handling error and got bundled into touch on attack. 6.5
6 TE MAIRE MARTIN: Busy again from a ball-running perspective (11 runs for 91 metres with five tackle-breaks), had a hand in SJ’s try and a line-break assist, and made 17 tackles. Terrible defensive read in the Ben Trbojevic try. 6.5
7 SHAUN JOHNSON: Far from perfect with a missed tackle in the lead-up to Manly’s first try and a poor decision contributing to their third, while spraying a simple conversion when done by eight was an agonising moment. But carried the Warriors into golden point with a sizzling 40-metre solo four-pointer and laid on the vital late try for DWZ before nailing the crucial conversion out wide. Throwback stats with 147 metres from 21 runs, and kicked well with one forced drop-out but also one that went dead. 8
8 ADDIN FONUA-BLAKE: Lacked the usual barnstorming impact to the naked eye, but a monstrous 21 runs for 196 metres (78 post-contact) and 47 tackles – which would have to close to a career-high – in a 74-minute shift. 8
9 WAYDE EGAN: Constantly threatened to unlock Manly’s defence around the ruck and finished with 95 metres from 10 runs with five tackle-breaks, along with making a whopping 58 tackles. Nice hand in the late Dallin try. One handling error from not watching for the offload. 7.5
10 MITCH BARNETT: Colossal work-rate with 17 runs for 164 metres and 50 tackles in 64 minutes on the park, plus an offload that lead to Johnson’s try. Had a handling error, a penalty and a ruck infringement, but overall a huge effort. 8
11 JACKSON FORD: Big defensive load with 48 tackles but not the happiest of games on the other side of the ball, making just six runs and coming up with three handling errors. 5.5

12 KURT CAPEWELL: Eleven runs for 85 metres and 47 tackles on an edge that struggled at times. One handling error and two penalties conceded. 6.5
13 TOHU HARRIS: Lovely assist for Jazz’s try was a clear highlight, while worked the house down with 26 runs for a 148 metres and 54 tackles in 82 minutes on the park. A golden point fumble when the Warriors were in ideal position to slot the winning field goal was an agonising way to finish a huge performance from the skipper. 8
14 CHANEL HARRIS-TAVITA: Decent contribution in a Dylan Walker-ish role, making six runs and 13 tackles in 18 minutes, as well as doing a bit of ball-playing and kicking. 6
15 TOM ALE: A 22-minute stint including four hit-ups, 15 tackles, a handling error and penalty. 5
16 JAZZ TEVAGA: An eventful nine minutes on the field, charging over for the Warriors’ first try – his first since Round 3 last year – among six runs before being helped off the field with a serious-looking leg injury. 6
17 JACOB LABAN: Held his spot in the 17 and looked solid again in a couple of short bursts, making five runs for 48 metres and 10 tackles across 19 minutes. 5.5
